Fell Running

As a member of Shrewsbury AC there are many opportunities to compete in Fell races. If you are a member of another club it may be possible to compete for Shrewsbury AC. Use the enquiry form to get more information.

Why compete?

  • Competition is where you are able to put all your training into practice, pitting yourself against other athletes and aiming to set a personal best mark.
  • In Championship competitions your Club needs as many athletes as possible taking part to get the best result for the team
  • You will also enjoy the camaraderie of your teammates, and if old enough, to enjoy a post run discussion over a pint and a chip butty.

Fell Running.

Shropshire is fortunate to have some good local hills to train and race on as well as being close enough to Wales for day visits. Many of the Senior non-track athletes combine fell running with cross country and road racing.

The Fell Running Association (FRA) website has a calendar of races and results.

Kit & Equipment and Safety Requirements.

Fell running can be a dangerous sport. There are mandatory kit and equipment requirements. Race organisers will carry out kit checks. Competitors without the necessary equipment will not be allowed to compete. To make sure you don’t have a wasted journey check out the requirements here – Safety Rules and Equipment from 2014.

Age restrictions.

Race organisers will stipulate age limits for their race. To avoid a wasted journey – check the minimum age before you travel

Shropshire has both a Summer and Winter Fell Race series.

For information about the races in the series use this link. These races make a good introduction to this branch of athletics. The link also gets you to information about other fell and trail races in Shropshire and neighbouring areas.
